Being Whale Wise

A whale tail emerges from the water where there are the dorsal fins of two other whales visible.

One of our significant recent successes occurred earlier this year when the government announced the latest measures to support the recovery of Southern Resident Killer Whales. This increased the minimum distance for private boats and whale watching vessels around the Southern Resident Killer Whales from 200 to 400 meters. ⠀

Along with this announcement, the government also announced the creation of temporary sanctuary zones that are closed to vessel traffic, and the partial shutdown of some recreational and commercial salmon fisheries.⠀

While this was an important step towards helping Southern Resident Killer Whales, more steps need to be taken. ⠀

We all need to play our part and while you enjoy the long weekend and please be whale wise! ⠀
