Kitlope lake

Beautiful colourful vista of bright light blue Kitlope lake nestled among green tree covered slopes and blue and white snow peaks on the far end.

This is Kitlope lake. I had the extreme privilege of going here to do some work for Raincoast Conservation.⠀

It was the most incredible place I’ve ever been to. Every corner we turned was astonishing. I saw grizzlies for the first time, the most beautiful landscapes and the trip ended with two days spent with Xenaksiala elder, Cecil Paul, listening to stories of growing up there, being taken away to residential school and finding healing in the Kitlope. Check out his book Stories From the Magic Canoe – it’s an amazing glimpse into this life.⠀

The Kitlope is protected from logging and grizzlies are protected from the current hunting ban, but there is still commercial hunting of other animals happening in the area – to no benefit of the people whose territory this is and with no science backed management. Raincoast is standing with the Haisla and Xenaksiala to buy the commercial hunting rights in the Kitlope.

Let’s keep wild places wild. Find out more here.
